17th annual NBFL Blair Doucet Youth Summer Camp

The New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) is hosting its 17th annual Blair Doucet Youth Summer Camp (BDYSC) at the Moncton campus of  l`Université de Moncton from August 7 to 11. Opening ceremonies begin on Monday evening with 13 youth attending camp from around the province.

Blair Doucet’s, daughter, who is also a union Vice-President of the NBFL, Paula Doucet, will welcome camp participants by saying: “It is an honor to be able to carry on my Dad’s legacy by sharing important life skills with each of you this week. This knowledge will follow you during your entire working life, whether you are a union member or not.”

Camp participants can expect to learn, have fun and make friends during the five day camp. In the mornings campers will learn about the history of the labour movement, their rights as workers and labour’s role in the broader society. In the afternoons and evenings they will discover some of the activities and attractions in the Greater Moncton area and surroundings.

The BDYSC is open to New Brunswick youth with at least one parent that is a member of a labour union affiliated with the New Brunswick Federation of Labour. The camp is funded mostly through the generous contributions received from NBFL affiliates, Higgins Insurance and the Canadian Labour Congress. Each camp participant will also receive a of $250 scholarship for their participation when they graduate from high school and demonstrate that they are enrolled in a post-secondary education program.

The camp’s closing ceremonies will be held on Friday August 11th at 11 am at the Pavillon Adrien-J.-Cormier building at the Moncton Campus of l’Université de Moncton in Room 132. Camp participants will put their knowledge into action by presenting to their parents what they have learned during the week.

Blair Doucet, NBFL President from 1999 to 2005, founded the camp. He believed that the union movement should be brought to the youth of the province. Doucet passed away in February 2009. The summer camp is named in his memory.
