2017 NBFL Convention
2017 NBFL Convention
The New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) will hold its 53rd convention at the Delta Beausejour hotel in Moncton from Sunday May 28 to Wednesday May 31, 2017. Proceedings will start on Sunday May 28 at 6:30 p.m. The theme for this years convention is: “Together….For a Better New Brunswick”
“Recently the labour movement has achieved gains that will improve the lives of workers. The federal government is finally recognizing asbestos as the leading cause of work-related deaths in Canada and banning its use. The labour movement’s lobbying efforts also led to improvements to the Canada Pension Plan and to improvements to fairness in the Temporary Foreign Worker program.” says Patrick Colford, NBFL President. “I am proud of these victories. When we work together towards a common objective, we can achieve remarkable things.”
The Convention, which is held every two years, is the NBFL’s governing body. A busy agenda awaits delegates. Over 40 resolutions will be debated and voted upon, guiding the work of the NBFL over the next 2 years. Many guest speakers are scheduled during the convention, including leaders from: the Broadbent Institute, BloodWatch, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, the Canadian Labour Congress and the United Food and Commercial Workers union to name a few. Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m., delegates will elect officers for the NBFL Executive positions for a 2-year term.
Two retired union members will be inducted to the NBFL Honour Roll. A public rally against paid plasma is also scheduled during the Convention, and the NBFL will be launching a campaign calling for the New Brunswick government to restore balance at WorkSafeNB.
The NBFL is New Brunswick’s largest central labour body with over 40,000 members representing over 325 local unions from both the public and private sectors.
