The New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) will hold its 54th convention at the Four Points Sheraton hotel in Edmundston from Sunday May 26 to Wednesday May 29, 2019. Proceedings will start on Sunday May 26 at 2:00 p.m. The theme for this year’s convention is: “The Power is in Your Hands!”
“May 2019 marks the one-hundredth year anniversary of the Winnipeg General Strike where worker unrest led to improved wages and working conditions for all workers. We are witnessing a similar situation today with workers coming together, occupying MLAs offices and walking the picket-line in Belldune, in response to employers bringing unions to court to strip unionized workers of their right to free collective bargaining,” says Patrick Colford, NBFL President. “When workers come together peacefully to use their collective power, as the convention theme says: the power is in your hands!”
The Convention, which is held every two years, is the NBFL’s governing body. A busy agenda awaits delegates. Over 35 resolutions will be debated and voted upon, guiding the work of the NBFL over the next 2 years. Many guest speakers are scheduled during the convention, including Danny Shur, the writer and producer of Stand! The Musical, a musical based on the Winnipeg General Strike. Other guest speakers include labour leaders from: the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and the Canadian Labour Congress, to name a few. Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m., delegates will elect officers for the NBFL Executive positions for a two-year term.
The NBFL is New Brunswick’s largest central labour body with over 35,000 members representing over 288 local unions from both the public and private sectors.
