Blair Doucet Youth Summer Camp

Blair Doucet Youth Summer Camp

(Exceptionally, the 2020 Blair Doucet Youth Summer Camp is cancelled due to COVID-19. In its place the NBFL is organizing Virtual Youth Learning Workshops from Aug 4-7, 2020. More details to follow.)

Each year, the New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) organizes a labour summer camp at the Moncton campus of l’Université de Moncton.

At these camps, participants learn about the labour movement and its history, workplace health & safety, the environment, child labour and sweatshops. Participants will also explore issues of human rights, collective bargaining, multiculturalism and equality rights.

Education sessions are mostly held before noon, while leisure activities, such as visits to Magic Mountain, bowling, and other entertainment, take place in the afternoon and evening.

To be eligible, the youth must be a secondary school student (grades 9 to 12), and be a son or daughter of a member of a local union affiliated to the NBFL. There is a $125 registration fee, payable upon acceptance. Financial assistance with the registration fee may be possible from the NBFL and/or CLC upon request.

Many national, international, local labour organizations contribute to sponsor one or more campers. This keeps the registration fee low. Many unions finance the participation of trainers and camp chaperones. The NBFL chooses among the eligible youth who will attend the camp. Union locals that make a financial contribution can select which youth attends the camp.

It is also important to know that each participant receives a $250 scholarship upon completion of grade 12 and their acceptance into a post-secondary education program.
