Scholarships

Every year, the New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) offers several different scholarships and bursaries. Some are open to all New Brunswick students, while others are reserved to the sons and daughters of members of local unions affiliated with the NBFL.

A brief description of the various awards, bursaries and scholarships can be found when you click on its name. An application form is also available. All awards are valued at $500.

James A. Whitebone Memorial

Number of Scholarships: 2

Annual value of each scholarship: $500.00

Scholarship Overview: The scholarships are for FIRST YEAR attendance at any University in the Atlantic Province or first year attendance in a two year program of the New Brunswick

Community College, excepting where the desired academic program is not available in the region

Eligibility:  members, or their children, who belong to local unions affiliated with the NBFL.

Application Deadline: June 30th of each year.

Tim McCarthy Environment

Prize Value: $500.00

Prize Overview:

Established in 1991 to recognize the contribution of former NBFL President Tim McCarthy to the trade union movement, the object of the award is to encourage post secondary studies of one or more years duration in fields relating to environmental protection and education.

Eligibility: This prize is open to NBFL members or their children, who are pursuing higher education in fields relating to environmental protection and education. Applicants may be in their first or subsequent years of post secondary studies.

Application Deadline: June 30th of each year.

NBFL Solidarity Bursaries

Bursary Value: $500.00 each

Number of Bursaries: 2

Bursary Overview: The objective of the award is to encourage greater public awareness and understanding of the value to workers and society. Funded by AIL Canada, a unionized insurance provider, these two bursaries serve to promote greater awareness and understanding of the value of unions.

Eligibility: These two bursaries are open to any person regardless of union membership pursuing post secondary education full-time or enrolled in high school at the grade 12 level.

Application Deadline: June 30th of each year.

J. Harold Stafford Humanitarian Award

Award Value:  $500.00

Award Overview: This annual award aims at assisting with the funding for worthwhile union or community project.

Eligibility: Local union members and labour councils affiliated with the NBFL undertaking labour history projects, labour libraries, Day of Mourning monuments, etc., as well retraining programs due to plant downsizing or closures.

Dermot Kingston Lifelong Learning Award

Award Value: $500.00

Award Overview: The purpose of this award is to encourage and support continuous training and literacy programs for workers.

Eligibility: Eligible for consideration are NBFL affiliates, as well as provincial and community organizations undertaking or sponsoring, partially or fully, literacy projects and workplace related training activities including union developed programs.

Owen MacLennan Trade Unionist of the Year

OwenThe Owen MacLennan Trade Unionist of the Year Award is an annual award. The application deadline is June 30 every year. This award acknowledges and celebrates individual trade unionists who have made a significant and/or ongoing contribution to the labour movement. Both union staff and union members are eligible for nomination.

The Owen MacLennan Trade Unionist of the Year Award was established in 2020, on the 10th anniversary of the passing of Owen MacLennan. Owen MacLennan worked at Eastern Bakeries from 1951 to 1994. He had a strong work ethic and was an active member of the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union (BCTGM) local 406 in Moncton.

A donation in the amount of $1,000 will be made by Argus Audiology in the name of the award recipient to the New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) Blair Doucet Youth Summer Camp. The presentation of the award will be made during labour day weekend each year. Award recipients will also be formally recognized during the NBFL Convention.
