NBFL to hold it’s 55th Convention at the Delta hotel in Saint John from Sunday May 28 to Wednesday May 31, 2023
The New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) will hold its 55th convention at the Delta hotel by Marriott in Saint John from Sunday May 28 to Wednesday May 31, 2023. Proceedings will start on Sunday May 28 at 2:00 p.m. The theme for this year’s convention is: “Workers Unite – Unions Now!”
“The pandemic was a turning point for workers. Many were laid off as communities and provinces shut down. Many workers had to juggle child care, home-schooling and everything else. As a result, the accepted norms have started to change,” says Daniel Legere, NBFL President. “In New Brunswick, and around the world, we continue to see workers demanding to be treated fairly and with respect. We are seeing workers rejecting tentative agreements that do not keep up with the cost of living. We are seeing workers taking job action and winning better agreements.”
The Convention, which is usually held every two years, was delayed because of the ongoing pandemic. The last NBFL convention was held in May 2019. The convention is the NBFL’s governing body.
A busy agenda awaits delegates. Resolutions will be debated and voted upon, guiding the work of the NBFL over the next 2 years. Several guest speakers are scheduled during the convention, including Matthew Green, the Federal NDP labour critic and Minerva Porelle with the Canadian Injured Workers’ Alliance of Canada. Labour leaders from the United Steelworkers and the Canadian Labour Congress will also address delegates. Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m., delegates will elect officers for the NBFL Executive positions for a two-year term.
The NBFL is New Brunswick’s largest central labour body with over 40,000 members representing over 317 local unions from both the public and private sectors.
