Blair Doucet Youth Summer Camp: brings the labour movement to the youth of New Brunswick

The 20th edition of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour Blair Doucet youth summer camp is concluding today.

The camp hosted 20 youth from across the province and from affiliates of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) including from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), The New Brunswick Nurses Union (NBNU), the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) and the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union (BCTGM).

“This camp helps youth understand the role that unions play in their communities,” said Chris Watson, President of the NBFL.

The mornings are dedicated to education on health and safety, union history, and their rights as young workers, as many have part-time after school jobs.

“This camp has been a dream of my father, Blair Doucet, for more the 25 years,” said Paula Doucet daughter of Blair Doucet and this year’s camp coordinator. “Being able to provide some youth with valuable life-long tools helps make our community and workplaces better,” adds Doucet.

Youth receive a $250 bursary upon proof of their high school graduation for each year they attend the camp. Blair Doucet was the president of the NBFL from 1999-2005. He founded the camp. He believed that the union movement should be brought to the youth of the province. Doucet passed away in February 2009. The camp is named in his memory.
