First Vice-President steps into NBFL Presidency until May 2025 convention

January 9, 2025

On December 26, 2024 the labour movement lost one of its greatest champions. Daniel “Danny” Legere passed away following a brief battle with cancer. Danny was in his third term as the President of the NB Federation of Labour, and many would also remember him as a past CUPE NB president for many years prior to this.

Danny’s involvement was not only within the labour movement, but also within coalitions that held true to his commitment to a better NB; Coalitions such as Pay Equity, Common Front for Social Justice and the NB Health Coalition are just a few that Danny lent his time, commitment and expertise to, and his loss will be felt for many years to come.

The New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) First Vice President, Chris Watson, has assumed the role as interim President until the NBFL Convention in May 2025, where election of officers will take place. “The loss of Danny is heartbreaking for all of us, but he would want us to continue the important work of continuing to elevate the voice of workers in New Brunswick”, said Chris Watson. “Danny has always kept us up to date on files and issues, and although we all will miss his wisdom and experience, we are committed as a federation to make him proud as we continue to work together in labour,” said Watson.

Attendance at his recent funeral was testament to the level of respect Danny garnered over the years. The Premier of New Brunswick, Susan Holt, Federal Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, New Brunswick Green Leader David Coon, CLC President Bea Bruske, as well as many labour and community leaders from the Atlantic Provinces were in attendance to pay their respects to Danny’s family and friends. The NBFL Convention is slated for May 25 – 27, 2025 in Saint John New Brunswick.
