March 10, 2026

The New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL), in collaboration with Higgins Insurance, is pleased to announce the creation of the Daniel Legere Memorial Scholarship. This $2,500 scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis.

The Daniel Legere Memorial Scholarship is created in loving memory of longstanding union and social justice activist, Daniel Legere. Legere was involved is the labour movement for over 40 years, holding various leadership roles. He passed away while serving as President of the NBFL in December 2024.

“This scholarship is an excellent way to carry Danny’s work forward”, says Chris Watson, President of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour. “Brother Legere devoted a lot of time and energy in encouraging and supporting labour and social justice activists to get more involved to achieve their potential. His work in this area has contributed to developing many union and social activists.”

Students pursuing post-secondary, with at least one parent or legal guardian who is a member of a labour union affiliated with the NBFL, are encouraged to apply. Applicants must demonstrate their social and or labour activism in their application essay. The deadline to apply is June 30th. The scholarship is open to students enrolled or accepted in a recognized post-secondary institution.

This award is made possible by the generous annual donation of $2,500 from Higgins Insurance Company.

“I was proud to call Danny colleague, mentor and a friend,” says Robert Keays, Director of Business Development with Higgins Insurance. “Higgins Insurance is pleased to support Daniel Legere’s legacy of fostering social and labour engagement in our youth.”
