NBFL Remembers and Celebrates Daniel Legere’s Life and Legacy
With profound sadness, the New Brunswick Federation of Labour announces the passing of our esteemed leader, our President, Brother Daniel “Danny” Légère. Danny Légère was a beacon of the New Brunswick labour movement and a relentless advocate for workers’ rights.
Danny passed away at home on December 26th, 2024, following a brief yet valiant battle with cancer. His passing leaves us all deeply grieved.Danny Légère was more than a respected figurehead; he was the heart and soul of the trade union movement in New Brunswick.
Danny’s journey as a correctional officer began many decades ago, and from there, a true trade unionist was born. From the outset, he stood firm for workers’ rights, championing grievances and his relentless advocacy for improved wages, pensions, and pay equity, first contract arbitration, better pro-worker legislation, improving Occupational Health and Safety and his staunch opposition to privatizing public services defined his remarkable career.
His unwavering dedication to social justice and workers’ rights shaped our Federation and resonated across Canada. His significant role as a Canadian Labour Congress National Board member is a testament to his far-reaching influence.Danny’s leadership was marked by integrity, passion, and unwavering dedication, no matter the cause.
As a corrections officer, he quickly got involved in his union and became the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) president in New Brunswick. In that position, he led unprecedented growth and heightened worker engagement. Danny was also a General Vice President for many years on the National Executive Board of CUPE National and was acclaimed by many as a “Senator in CUPE,” always uplifting others to realize their full potential.
Danny’s influence transcended the confines of the labour movement, and he was very proud to be recognized by L’Acadie Nouvelle as one of the top 30 influential New Brunswick francophones. His advocacy for social unionism broadened the horizons of all working people in the province.He was also a long-time member of the province’s NDP and many social justice organizations in New Brunswick.
The void left by Danny’s passing is immense. Yet, his legacy of leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to workers’ rights will continue to guide and inspire future generations of labour activists. During this difficult time, the New Brunswick Federation of Labour and the Canadian labour movement extend our condolences to Danny’s family, friends, and colleagues.
We will remember and cherish his invaluable contributions to enhancing workers’ lives for years. His memory will continue illuminating our path forward, reminding us that fighting for justice, equity, and dignity is a fight worth fighting.
