Statement from the New Brunswick Federation of Labour for National Unemployment Week

As we observe National Unemployment Week, the New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL) reaffirms our commitment to stand in solidarity with all workers who face the harsh realities of unemployment. This week serves as a reminder of the challenges many laid-off workers and seasonal employees endure, particularly concerning the Employment Insurance (EI) system.

Employment Insurance was designed as a safety net for workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. However, the system has increasingly fallen short of its intended purpose, leaving many individuals without the support they need. Recent statistics reveal that many laid-off workers cannot access EI benefits simply because they do not meet the eligibility criteria. In New Brunswick, the barriers to accessing EI have become insurmountable for countless individuals who have contributed to this system throughout their working lives.

Seasonal workers, who are vital to our economy, face additional hurdles. Many rely on seasonal employment to make ends meet, but the current EI framework needs to consider their work’s unique nature adequately. The hours required to qualify for benefits have become a significant barrier, leaving many workers needing more support during off-seasons. This affects their financial stability and undermines the economic health of our communities, which rely on the seasonal workforce.

It is important to emphasize that EI is not a tax but an insurance system workers pay into to protect themselves during unemployment. When we contribute to EI, we invest in our own safety net, expecting it to be there for us when we need it most. Yet, as it stands, too many workers are left in limbo, unable to access these essential benefits. This is unacceptable.

We urgently call on the federal government to reform the EI system to better serve the needs of workers in New Brunswick and across Canada. It is time to eliminate barriers that prevent access to benefits and to ensure that the system truly functions as the insurance it was intended to be. Workers should not have to navigate a maze of red tape in their time of need.

During this National Unemployment Week, let us, as a united force, advocate for a fair and equitable Employment Insurance system that safeguards all workers. Together, we can drive the changes needed to ensure that no one is left behind when they need support the most.
